2013 Salute Our Heroes KC Armed Forces Day Parade and Celebration.
*For Immediate Release.
April 23, 2013

An Armed Forces Day Without The Armed Forces

                                          Charles Wheeler Named Grand Marshal

The second annual Armed Forces Day- "Salute Our Heroes" in the military and our veterans will still be held on May 18 despite the news that due to the sequestration (federal budget cuts) none of the branches of the U.S. Armed Forces will be represented during the May 18 Armed Forces Day event in Kansas City.

From fly overs, to marching bands, from color guards to military displays none will be seen at the parade, nor at the all day exposition or in the patriotic concert in Washington Square Park in midtown Kansas City. (Across from Crown Center Hotel)

The non appearance of the active military has also affected the contributions and participation by the Greater Kansas City business community.

Despite the disappointing responses the Salute Our Heroes committee continues to plan a 11 a.m. parade on May 18 followed by an exposition of area organizations ready to advise veterans on various matters including health and opportunities in the civilian world, as well as all day entertainment and a two hour patriotic concert starting at 7 p.m.

Former Kansas City Mayor and Missouri State Senator Charles Wheeler has been named Grand Marshal for the May 18th parade. The 86 year old Wheeler served in both WWII and the Korean Wars as Captain and Flight Surgeon in the US Air Force and Navy. He was Kansas City mayor from 1971 to 1979 and State Senator from 2003 to 2007.

David Page, a Gladstone resident and organizer of the event, is still enthusiastic that the community will get behind the tribute to our military. "While we have not reached our financial goal of producing such a patriotic thank you to our military. However, I am confident that we will do so," he said. " We still need sponsors and volunteers and we are grateful to the sponsors who enthusiastically support this tribute as well as the scores of unpaid patriotic volunteers who give of their time and effort."

Sequester Impacts Armed Forces Day Event

The deep federal budget cuts, known as sequestration, have impacted an
Armed Forces Day event on May 18th in Kansas City, Missouri.
The day long event- Salute Our Heroes KC -is a visual tribute to the
active military serving our country and to the veterans who went
before them and is hosted by The Northland  JC Foundation chaired by
Gladstone resident David Page
Page noted that the Pentagon and the Department of Defense have
frozen, or cancelled,  most major public military appearances
throughout the country due to budget cuts resulting in no military fly
overs during the all day event at Washington Square Park, Grand
Boulevard and Pershing Road (North of Crown Center). "We also lost
some military information booths and some units who were to
participate in the parade," Page said. The second annual Salute Our
Heroes KC event will begin with a morning Fallen Heroes Ceremony at
Kansas City Hall on Friday, May 17th.
On Armed Forces Day at 11 a.m. there will be parade starting at
Pershing Road and Grand Boulevard and ending at Pershing Road and
Following the parade citizens are invited to nearby Washington Square
Park for a veterans exposition to showcase service providers for
benefits and services available for all veterans. There will be live
entertainment leading up to a patriotic concert at 7 p.m.
All events are free to the public and they are invited to bring
blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy
the patriotic performances.
Despite the military edict to cancel public appearances the Kansas
City event will go on as planned produced by a group of patriotic
community volunteers and corporate sponsors. "It is our way of saying
thank you to the military and our veterans for keeping us safe." Page

The Northland JC Foundation will be hosting the 2013 Kansas City Armed Forces Day Parade and Celebration on Saturday May 18, 2013 in midtown KC. This will be a military / veteran’s appreciation event to recognize the service of all military members and veterans and thank them for their dedication and service. The community and all active members of the military, veterans, and their families are invited to participate. The theme for this year’s event is "Salute Our Heroes".

The plan calls for a Fallen Heroes Ceremony to be held on Friday, May 17, 2013 at City Hall, followed by a tour of the WW1 War Memorial and a concert there on Friday evening. The salute continues on Saturday with a parade in midtown Kansas City, north of Crown Center.  After the parade there will be fun and entertainment throughout the afternoon and evening in Washington Square Park, located at Pershing Rd. and Grand Blvd.  During the afternoon, there will be a veterans services expo, military exhibits and music. The celebration will conclude with a community “Salute to the Armed Forces” concert.
